Sinopsis; Un hombre blanco ha sido asesinado en un pueblo del sur, y todo el mundo culpa de ello a un hombre negro, basándose únicamente en vagas hipótesis.
Pero de la monstruosa masa que quiere linchar al sospechoso, emergen un abogado, una anciana y un muchacho que estarán dispuestos a arriesgar sus propias vidas y a aliarse para evitar el linchamiento.

Comentario; Cuando se habla sobre el tema del linchamiento en el cine, casi siempre salen a relucir "Fury" (F. Lang, 1936) o "Incident in Ox Bow" (W. Wellman, 1943).
Cuando se habla sobre la injusticia racial, se nombran "Crossfire" (E.Dmytryk, 1947) o "Gentleman´s agreement" (1947).
Cuando se quiere hacer referencia al sensacionalismo periodístico, salen a relucir "His girl friday" (H.Hawks, 1940) o "Ace in the hole" (B.Wilder, 1951).
Y este inmortal clásico de 1949, queda casi siempre olvidado, a pesar de ser una película que combina estos tres temas de manera atractiva, mordaz e ingeniosa.
Anticipándose incluso a Charles Laughton ("La noche del cazador" (1955)), Brown logró una fábula rural en la que se nos muestran todas las caras del comportamiento humano, y donde el humor y y la ironía brillan por encima de la injusticia social.
